What Are Fugitive Emissions?

They can occur at almost any connection point in a process system: valves, pumps, compressors, flanges, sampling points, or pressure relief devices.

While they may seem small on an individual basis, the cumulative effect is significant. According to BloombergNEF, for example, venting and flaring together made up roughly three-quarters of methane emissions in 2021, with the remainder attributed to unintentional leaks – fugitive emissions.

  • Ultrasonic Leak Detection: Sensors that identify the high-frequency sound generated by escaping gas.
  • Acoustic Imaging Cameras: Devices that map sound signatures of leaks across a wide field of view.
  • LDAR (Leak Detection and Repair) Programmes: Structured approaches that combine technology, monitoring, and maintenance schedules.
